My #1 FAQ: Celeb Sightings

Just a heads up: this post is name-drop-central.  You have been warned.

The first question I get when people find out I live in LA is: Do you see celebrities all the time?!?!

The answer is actually, surprisingly yes.  BUT...not exactly in the way you'd think...

There have only been a couple times where I've seen celebs how you probably picture it ...lots of paparazzi, on set, or really glammed up.  Usually, they're hard to spot, and you only see them if you have a weirdly acute skill for facial recognition--which is evidently my superpower.  Really, celebrities are just normal people.  And it's nice for them to be able to blend in and have some sense of privacy since their lives are so public.  I promise I'm not a celebrity stalker, nor do I idolize them and think they are better than other people.  Please don't judge that I've noticed so many people in my days in LA.  That's my preface.  :)

With that said, here's a list of some of my most recent sightings...and maybe some from awhile back (like I said, I have a weird superpower):

  • Ben McKenzie (the OC): outside Son of a Gun restaurant yesterday--he even photo-bombed my picture of Parker (see above); and once in NYC--double sighting--does that mean we're destined to be friends?
  • a million people at the Dodgers game this past weekend: Jason Bateman, Bryan Cranston, Eric Stonestreet (Cam), + Keith Olbermann
  • Sam Waterson from The Newsroom: walking down the sidewalk on THIS day in Manhattan Beach
  • Clark Gregg: plays Phil Coulson in Agents of SHIELD and The Avengers, by the beach
  • Will Arnett:  Ali + I were walking to Abbott Kinney, and he pulled up in his car right by us
  • John Gallagher, Jr.:  Jim from the Newsroom, at a Jon Brion concert
  • Chauncey Billups: on the bike path with my brother--he's a big sports fan, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed him
  • Julie Bowen (the mom from Modern Family): she was in the audience at a play Parker and I went to this winter--and she IS Claire Dunphy
  • Tom Hanks: sighting ever.  We passed each other in a crosswalk in Santa Monica.  We were the only ones in the crosswalk, and I about died.
  • Josh Groban: at the Grove Farmers Market just gettin' dinner
  • Kristen Bell: at church
  • Tony Hale: also at church--did I mention Buster is one of our elders?
  • Emily VanCamp (Revenge): just biking down the bike path near Venice Beach
  • Kevin Bacon: also on the bike path, AND at Disneyland--does that mean I'm -2 degrees from Kevin Bacon??!?
  • Gary Dourdan: totally random, didn't even know his name, just recognized his face and of those crime shows...
  • Giuliana Rancic: in the lobby of the E! office building--she's super tall
  • Norm MacDonald: on a street corner in Venice, after 4th of July fireworks a couple years ago
  • Harrison Ford:  He came in to work one day to record something...he was short and his hair was fully gray.  Hans Solo's gettin' old!
  • THIS guy from LOST: at Ketchup in Hollywood
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger: Biking in Venice.  The Govenator was wearing shorts, y'all.  See my Instagram for visual evidence.
  • Will Forte (SNL): biking on Abbott Kinney
  • Michael C. Hall (aka Dexter):  Jogging at Runyon Canyon
  • Barry Watson: my 7th Heaven crush--at Finn McCools on Main St.  We totally made eye contact.
  • Devon Sawa: Ummm my all-time teenage crush!!!  At Blockbuster, LOL.  He was short, and looked e.x.a.c.t.l.y. the same as in Now + Then
  • Weird Al Yankovic: at a Hanson concert.  Yeah, I'm serious about that one.  Double trouble.
  • Natalie Portman: at the Hollywood farmers market--she's teeeeny
  • Sam Rockwell (Moon) + Leslie Bibb (the Skulls): grabbing dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Hollywood
  • Ian Somerhalder (from LOST): hopping into his car outside a house in Santa Monica
  • Emilio Estevez: hiking in Malibu on Valentine's Day
  • Hayden Panettierre: on set of Heroes--lots of paps at this one...
  • Jared Leto: accidentally almost hit him with my car as he was standing in the middle of the street talking to his neighbor in the Hollywood Hills--whoops!
  • Some sightings on sets include: Adam Sandler, Josh Duhamel, Tom Selleck, Keri Russell, + Ellen

Whew!  That was a lot.  I'm tired now.   Aaaand...promise I'm not crazy!  XOXO

LA friends, who is your best celebrity sighting?  And, everybody--which celeb would you most like to see?

Friday Faves: a solid batch!

I guarantee I'll expand on some of these more later, but here's a handful of my current faves!
Gray Malin Photography

Gray Malin Photography

  • Gray Malin Photography:  (above) He does a series of beaches and oceans from above, and I really want to invest in one this year.  Our engagement, honeymoon, and everyday life have taken place on beaches that he's photographed, so there are several pieces of his I'd like to buy!
  • Dine LA: I'm SO late on this (what kind of a blogger am I?!) but you if you can go tonight, do it!
  • Santa Monica Pier Twlight Concerts: We went last night, and it's so fun.  We're big fans of the beach at night.  This goes through September 12th, so head on out and take a picnic!
  • The New Girl:  I know I'm late to the game on this one, but I saw the pilot and it didn't click with me.  But now I'm on board.  Schmidt?!  I mean...
  • Katy Perry: Part of Me:  Never thought a documentary about a pop star could change my life, but seriously this one did.  She's so talented, and it's a heartwarming/breaking look into a life of fame.  I have a whole new respect for her.  Netflix stream that ish.
  • Beth Moore studies:  I'm on my second study now--James: Mercy Triumphs--and these are SUCH a blessing to me.  It's amazing!  I learn so much; they are seriously like taking a class on the Bible.
  • Heads Up App Game from Ellen:  A classic party game in app form.  The best part is it records your game and it's hilarious to watch back!
  • The Art of Clean Up:  I want this book!  Saw it in a bookstore, and if you have any ounce of OCD, please look at it.  The alphabet soup one is amazing.
  • 40 Days of Dating:  A verrry interesting social experiment where 2 friends date for 40 days...Can't.stop.reading.

Have a great weekend, and I'll see you back on Monday!  Mmmwah!

New Takes on Movie Night Popcorn

We LOVE watching movies (and TV)!  I guess that's good since we both work in the entertainment industry.  It's actually a pretty constant battle for us to avoid acquiring too many more shows.  Ain'tnobodygottimeforthat!

What goes better with a movie night than some yummy popcorn!?  I inherited my hubby's air pop machine, and let me tell you, that puppy gets a lot of use in our house!  Also, I recently found these cute paper popcorn boxes at the grocery, which make a movie night even more fun.

My hands-down favorite popcorn is straight-up movie style, with salt and real melted butter.  Mmmm...  But, I do love to try different variations on an old favorite.  So check out this list of fun twists on traditional popcorn:

  • Parker's Hot Corn: salt, butter, cayenne pepper, grated parmesan (whew, it's spicy!)
  • Asian Sesame: sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds, sriracha, salt, dash of lime
  • Parmesan Garlic: salt, pepper, olive oil, garlic powder, grated parmesan
  • S'mores: see a recipe HERE
  •  Sticky  Marshmallow: butter, brown sugar, melted marshmallows, YUM!
  • Ranch: just use a Ranch dry seasoning packet or a product like THIS
  • Dill: buy a popcorn seasoning or THIS recipe

What's your favorite popcorn topping?

Oh, and speaking of shows--anybody excited for The Newsroom season 2 premiere this Sunday?  We are!

Kubrick @ LACMA - Hurry!

So, I've had a few days off the past couple of weeks...ah, the unpredictable life of a freelancer...  I've actually kept pretty busy, but the last couple days I've gotten a bit stir crazy.  That's when a friend reminded me that the Stanley Kubrick exhibit was ending soon!  So I decided to rush over to LACMA yesterday to see it before it closed.

Go NOW--it closes after June 30th.

But, if you don't have time to go, at least you can see a little of it here on the blog.

I have only seen a couple of Kubrick's films (I love The Shining ), and I think the exhibit would resonate better with people who have seen more of his work.  I definitely want to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr. Strangelove now.  I still appreciated seeing all the behind-the-scenes elements about him as a director and filmmaker.

The Shining , my favorite!  So fun to see so many original props.

Did you feel like you were just watching the movie?  Oops, spoiler alert!

They also had scripts for several of the films where he had made notes upon reading it for the first time.   Pretty cool.

My main takeaway was: Kubrick was a weirdo.  But I guess geniuses usually do have a screw loose somewhere.

  • Buy your tickets NOW!  they were sold out for the day when i got there, but luckily i'd bought them ahead of time online HERE
  • Carpool!  parking at LACMA is $10, eesh
  • Give yourself  at least 2-3 hours.  You'll want to check out other parts of LACMA, including a Picasso wing and a Matisse special exhibit.

In other news...who wants to buy me a Rothko?  ;)

I'm super excited about a few upcoming life events and their many corresponding posts (no, we're not preggo ;)), so have a wonderful [HOT] weekend and see you back here on Monday!  mmmmwah!
