You all read this blog. You KNOW how much I love food. Cooking it, eating it, photographing it. To use a food metaphor of how busy it's been around these parts lately...Exhibit A:
This Egg in a Basket is about the only thing I've cooked at home in the past month. Egg, butter, bread, hot sauce. That's all mama's had time and energy for. It's busy times, friends.
While this is actually one of my most favorite and simple breakfasts, the realization that those few ingredients are about all that's been in our fridge lately has left me craving some real talk here on the ole blog.
I feel a bit like I failed. And you probably didn't even know it. Back in the Spring, I started Westside Bestside and spent this Summer nurturing and loving it.
A wise friend suggested that I try to give myself a goal of committing to write for at least 6 solid months. See what doors open from your discipline, she said. And she was right. It has been so rewarding; I love blogging. I’m so proud of myself for what it's already grown into, and excited by the many connections it's allowed me to make. Little did you know, reader, that I gave myself the personal goal of posting once a day, M-F, for that whole 6 month period. I knew it was a LOFTY goal and that at some point I may need to have a little extra grace with myself. That point is now.
As you may know, I am a freelancer, so when I had a few weeks break, that’s when I started WSBS and was really able to see it grow and flourish. But on most weeks, when I work full time at a fast-paced job 60 plus hours a week, it’s a miracle if we have any food in the fridge or a pair of clean socks to our names, let alone a post up on the blog.
I thought I could still maintain it daily, sure I’d be busy, but maybe I could squeeze it in during some down time or come home and post at night. Ha! If I’m lucky enough to even make it home in time to eat dinner, the scene is far from productive (read: stress-eating over frozen Trader Joe’s pasta and 2 Buck Chuck at my coffee table while Pretty Little Liars plays in the background). The absolute last thing on my mind is writing a post about parmesan encrusted tilapia.
I'm not complaining, or asking for sympathy. I know I'm incredibly blessed. And, we all work hard and lack for time and energy. I just felt like it was time to get real for a minute. I think I just needed to get it out there, you know?
The moral of the story is, I can't promise you that I'll write every Monday through Friday, but I can promise you I will write about what I love when I can. And when I can't, I'll learn to have a little more grace with myself. I have a feeling I'm not the only one that puts pressure on myself to try to balance so many things at once, so I hope if you're reading this and you empathize, you know we're all figuring it out together.
It's continuing to be a busy season in WSBS world. Check back soon to see why...
