Westie: Best Vintage Store

In last week's Westie post, I mentioned that I'd be posting soon about my happy new vintage shop discovery!  To me, there's totally a difference between a Thrift store and Vintage store...and even an Antique store.  They are all very similar, but there are fine dividing lines.  If I had to give comparisons, it might look something like this:

  • Thrift store: least expensive, variety of styles, often cluttered + disorganized, wide-range of poor to fair condition
  • Vintage store: moderately priced, sometimes more curated to one type of style, overall more items in better condition than thrift store, store space is often styled well
  • Antique store: most expensive, items usually in excellent condition, presented more like a showroom

Now that we're on the same page...I'd like to introduce you to our newest Westie Award winner for Best Vintage Store...

Venice Vintage Paradise

VVP was smack in the center of Abbot Kinney for the past 10 years, but recently re-opened their doors in a new storefront at 2304 Abbot Kinney Blvd. Venice, CA 90291.

Check out their Facebook page, where they post regular updates of new items, or their Yelp page for reviews.

Things you should know about VVP:

  • Their stuff is AWESOME; lots of mid-century, and everything is on trend.
  • The store is beautiful
  • Jeanie (one of the co-owners) becomes your BFF as soon as you walk in
  • It's moderately priced, let's say $$ (as if that means anything...)
  • They have a super cute back patio, which they are open to renting out for events, photo/video shoots, etc.

Look at all these treasures!

I've always wanted a vintage library card catalogue, and this one's a beaut!

Pretty leaf-patterned textile and blankets galore!

I liked this winged wire chair and mud cloth textile a lot.

Any guesses on what this is?

baby carrier.jpg

If you guessed a 1930s German baby carrier--you were right!  I guessed a carrier for a 6-pack (like this one).  Beer, babies, tomAto, tomAHto. I love the fabric and the leather details!

So, I made it home with the turquoise textile and vintage baby carrier (don't get any ideas--it's for the future or our sweet niece), hooray!

If you're near here, please please stop into Venice Vintage Paradise.  You won't regret it!

LA Food + Wine Festival

You probably know by now how much I enjoy food :)

So, it pains me to say that the Los Angeles Food + Wine Festival is this weekend--August 22-25--and I probably won't be able to go.  Waaaaah!

The full VIP package is almost $1000--Yikes!  So if I did go, I'd probably just pick one or two of the events to attend.

Perhaps Fabio from Top Chef?

Or maybe I'd have an Italian feast with Giada?  Yummm...

Whose food would you want to taste?

They have a full range of events: mixology lessons, Asian food prep, and the chef from Baco Mercat (where we ate on our DTLA adventure day).  All the info you could want can be found HERE on the festival website.  Tickets can be purchased HERE.

Maybe WSBS will represent next year.  If you go, please tell me all about it so I can live vicariously through you!!

Westie: Urbanic Paper Boutique

When we started with these Wesites, I warned you they will get pret-ty specific.  So, when I tell you that I am awarding a Westie to my favorite paper store, you shouldn't be too surprised.  There are always chain paper stores like PaperSource, which are great in their own right.  But this local one is the bees knees!

The Westie for Best Paper Store goes to...

Stationery, Invitations + other fine things

Website HERE, located at 1644 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, CA 90291

I just love Urbanic!  First off, any of you love paper stores as much as I do?!  They always have the cutest cards, wrapping paper, and specialty gifts.  As far as store genres go, they are one of my Top 5.  Urbanic excels in this category because of owner, Audrey Woollen's keen sense of design.  Even though there is so much variety going on, not one piece in the store feels out of place.

I can spend hours browsing all the notecards, calendars, pens, and washi tape.  It's like the adult version of butterflies in my tummy when I would get to go shopping for school supplies--still makes me go eeeeee!!   I mean, these staplers!?!

And this entire nautical summer display...

And could this speak anymore to my heart?!

I love sending unique greeting cards, so I always get them here.  Urbanic curates products from brands that have so much personality and humor, making any card you send way more personal.  And, they always have Rifle Paper Co., which you know makes me swoon.

It's a must-see on the Westside!  Add that to the list of my happy places...

Check out Audrey's blog called Parcel Post for even more creative inspiration.  And, stop by the Urbanic store or website soon, and make sure you tell them Westside Bestside sent ya!
